Los Cabos Arch

the arch in los cabos mexico

Located on the southernmost tip of the Baja California Peninsula in Cabo San Lucas. This is a place where the waters of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez meet. At this location, there is an arch-shaped rock formation that has become the symbol of Los Cabos. You can arrive there by boat in 20 minutes. It is fairly common to spot seals, sea lions, pelicans and other bird species at this place, which is an ideal spot for fishing, scuba diving and snorkeling. You can also visit the famous Old Lighthouse, a monument that is more than 100 years old.

Located near El Arco, you can witness an amazing natural phenomenon, cascades that were created by tectonic plate movement. You can observe this natural wonder 30 meters (100 feet) under water. You’ll will find much diversity in these waters, which is why it has become a preferred spot for advanced divers. If you decide to go diving in this area, it is recommendable that you do it with an experienced guide.

Punta Colorada

punta colorada beach
Rocky beaches around Punta Colorada, the site of a fine old fishing village, become smooth sand as you travel south towards Punta Arena. Roads wander in various directions, but avoid the one leading to the Punta Arena lighthouse as this is a military base so you can't get near the beach. Swimming and camping are good here, the best is just south of the hotel.

El Medano Beach

el medano beach in cabo san lucas

Located in the middle of the Cabo San Lucas Bay near Marina Sol, it is one of the most popular beaches in Los Cabos. Here you can kick back and listen to some music while enjoying some delicious food or sipping on a refreshing drink.

Later, you can go swimming, boating, fishing, water-skiing, snorkeling, kayaking or surfing. A safe and quiet place for the entire family. Not a beach for those looking for privacy, El Médano beach is known for all-day happy hours and people watching. With plenty to do and little surf year round, this beach is highly recommended for families. Swimming areas are roped off along the beach.

Access: From downtown, walk around the marina past Puerto Paraiso and Marina Fiesta to the end and go left at the channel entrance. Parking is scarce; prepare to walk at least a few blocks, especially during spring break, and holidays.

Chileno Beach

aereal view of chileno bay

This long and fairly flat beach is a must on your vacation checklist. Excellent for swimming, kayaking, snorkeling, and diving on the reef, head southwest for privacy and to the palm grove for shade. Services: Restrooms and trash cans. Access: Km. 14.5, look for the parking lot fronting the highway near the Chileno Bay Club.

Well known for excellent snorkeling, diving, kayaking and clear aquamarine water teeming with marine life, Chileno beach (Chilean) is the best all-round beach in the Tourist Corridor. Chileno is wide, fairly flat, perfect for strolling or running, with safe swimming. Like Santa María, Chileno beach receives snorkel tours around midday—head northeast toward the point for more privacy. Rocky reefs run parallel to the beach with tropical fish, sea turtles, moray eels, invertebrates, sea urchins, gorgonians (sea fans), sponges, and starfish all abundant. Since the sale of the hotel to the Chileno Bay Club in early 2005, the Cabo Acuadeportes dive shop on the beach has been closed. Development plans call for a 36-hole Jack Nicklaus course, villas, homesites, 88-slip marina and yacht club at this private club.

Access: Easy to get to, the beach is close to the highway, look for the parking lot at Kilometer 14.5. A bus stop is nearby to the northeast. Access to this beach may change once Chileno Bay Club breaks ground. Part of the highway at Chileno Beach has been moved further back from the water. The access is now via an exit marked "Playa Publica"

Las Viudas Beach

las viudas beach in twin dolphin

Very close to Santa Maria, on the other side of the Twin Dolphin, Playa Las Viudas (Widows’ Beach) is also known as Twin Dolphin Beach. Well hidden from the road, it’s a favorite of locals looking for privacy, yet often you may be the only visitor. Access is next to the hotel entrance, on the southwest side at Km. 12. While not suitable for small children, Las Viudas beach is swimmable and has more seclusion to the southwest.

Although there are no designated “nude beaches” in Los Cabos, this is one area where the rock formations make it possible to discreetly sunbathe “au natural.” No resorts have claimed this stretch yet, and there are no services or beach vendors, making this gorgeous locale feel deliciously remote.

Lover's Beach

lovers beach
This beach is hidden behind the famous Arco in Cabo San Lucas. To arrive there you’ll need to take a water taxi that departs from the marina or El Medano Beach. This romantic spot, which can only be seen every four years when the tide recedes, offers a view of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez. This place has become a popular romantic getaway, as it gives you all the privacy you need. The waters are ideal for sailing, snorkeling, kayaking and other water sports.

Santa Maria
Santa Maria bay

Just east of the Hotel Twin Dolphin, this horseshoe-shaped gem tucked between two bluffs is a protected marine sanctuary. Perfect for families with very good swimming, snorkeling and dive sites offshore.

Like Chileno Bay, in Santa maria beach snorkel cruises arrive mid-day. Shade is scarce, so rent a beach umbrella, along with snorkeling gear, at the entrance. Access: Km. 13, follow the road to the parking area, about a quarter of a mile in from the highway.

Look for the beach access sign and follow the dirt road to the parking area. It is a short walk to this beautiful protected cove. As you gaze out to the azure sea you will see the peaceful horseshoe shaped beach with sand the color and consistency of pink rice. Relatively secluded, Bahía Santa María is a protected marine sanctuary, so bring along a bag of bread or tortillas and feed the multi-colored creatures of the deep. This is an excellent spot for snorkeling or just relaxing on the beach.
